Additionally, the following appeared in The International Angler (1998): Poaching Skipper Freed with Limbs The skipper of a Taiwanese longliner arrested while fishing three miles off Somalia was released with a $300,000 fine and escaped amputation of his left foot and right hand as ordered by the court. The 280-ton Shen Kno II was arrested by Somali officials as she was breaching her license by longlining within 25 miles of the coast and taking a high percentage of shark by-catch. A court demanded more than $3 million plus amputation of the captain’s left foot and hand. The boat was held for four months before the licensing company Afmet negotiated the longliner’s release with a reduced fine and the captain intact. Commercial fishers in the United States complain that quotas (limits) on shark catches in U.S. waters are unfair because many commonly caught species overwinter in Mexico or Brazil, where there are no restrictions.
