  • List and discuss some of Earth's external and internal processes.

  • Describe mechanical weathering and the roles that frost wedging, unloading, thermal expansion, and biological activity have in the process.

  • Describe chemical weathering and explain how the processes of dissolution, oxidation, hydrolysis, and alterations caused by chemical weathering modify Earth materials.

  • List and discuss the factors that control the rate of weathering.
  • Define soil and describe the factors that control soil formation.

  • Describe an idealized, well-developed soil profile and list its typical horizons.

  • List and describe some common soil types.

  • Discuss how soil is eroded and the factors that influence the rates of erosion.
