Related Web Sites

Rotating globe (Courtesy of the Great Globe Gallery)We have made a concerted effort to search the Web for relevant material, but no matter how hard we try there will always be more information available than we can possibly examine.

However, the following list contains links to many of the most interesting and informative Web sites related to topics explored in this exercise. Check them out, but make sure you come back to do more investigating when you're done.

Calculating Latitude and Longitude
This site features short quizzes covering latitude and longitude, among other related subjects.
Coordinate Conversions (National Geodetic Survey)
This conversion from the National Geodetic Survey computes either Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates from the geographic latitude and longitude, or performs the reverse conversion.
Coordinates, Datums and Tranformations
Links to coordinate- and datum-related Web sites and various foreign government agencies that deal with datums, etc.
Distance Calculator
This service uses data from the U.S. Census and a supplementary list of cities around the world to find the latitude and longitude of two places, and then calculates the great circle distance between them.
Geospatial Data (USGS)
A searchable database that tells how to access USGS geologic maps, reports, etc. related to a variety of geologic topics.
Great Circle Calculator
This is a good calculator, however, you need Javascript enabled if you want this page to do anything useful.
Great Circle Distance Calculator
Enter the coordinates to calculate great circle distance between locations.
Great Globe Gallery
An amazing collection of globes, a "must see."
Latitude/Longitude Conversion
Use this calculator to convert decimal degrees to degree minutes.
Latitude/Longitude Distance Calculator
Information at this Web site allows you to determine the distance between two points on the earth given their latitudes and longitudes.
Latitude and Longitude (MSN)
A brief description of latitude and longitude from MSN Encarta.
Map Machine (National Geographic)
Free, downloadable maps from the National Geographic Society.
Mapping Factsheets
United States Geological Survey (USGS) mapping factsheets that cover topics like UTM, map projections, map accuracy, etc.
Maps and References
The University of Iowa's very extensive list of links to maps and map references of all kinds.
National Atlas
The updated National Atlas is designed to provide a reliable summary of national-scale geographical information. Though it cannot provide detailed map information, the atlas directs users to other sources for this information.
National Geodetic Survey (U.S. Department of Commerce)
The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) defines and manages the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS)—the framework for latitude, longitude, height, scale, gravity, orientation and shoreline throughout the United States. NSRS provides the foundation for transportation, communication, and defense systems, boundary and property surveys, land records systems, mapping and charting, and a multitude of scientific and engineering applications.
Outline Maps
Free downloadable outline maps from Houghton Mifflin, Inc.
Surface Distance Calculator
Perhaps the best and easiest-to-use distance calculator.
Tiger Map Server (U.S.Census Bureau)
A good, basic interactive map program for locating places and general census information.
U.S. Color Landform Atlas
A good reference site for state shaded relief maps, county maps, satellite images, etc.
