- Kimberley Process
In 2000, the international diamond industry met in Kimberley, South Africa, and took the unprecedented step of regulating itself to avoid unintentional sales of "conflict diamonds", illegally mined and sold to finance war operations. This site details the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, which certifies diamonds and their origin. Further, it links to each of its 43 participants, transnational organizations such as the World Diamond Council, and non-governmental organizations such as Global Witness.
- Economic Community of West African States
Emerging as a serious political and military as well as economic organization, ECOWAS was instrumental in restoring some semblance of civil order into war-torn Ivory Coast and Liberia in 2004. This site is the ECOWAS homepage and links to each of its 15 member countries. It also provides picturesque links to places of interest throughout West Africa.
- East African Community
Formed in 2000, the East African Community is a regional intergovernmental organization aimed at solving shared environmental, economic and social problems. This website links to each of the three member countries: Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It also links to relevant sites, such as the Lake Victoria Development Program and the East African Petroleum Conference.
- Business Resources and Information Network (BRAIN), South Africa
This site is designed for those who are interested in doing business in South Africa. It was established by the Department of Trade and Industry: Centre for Small Business Promotion, in response to the need for easy access to information for the Small, Medium, Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) sector.
- World Bank: HIV/AIDS
The World Bank Group recognizes that AIDS is a major problem in Africa. This site provides epidemiological fact sheets by country (showing rates and direction of infection) and information on several programs to fight the spread of the diseases, such as ACTafrica, the Multi-Country HIV/AIDS Program (MAP), and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. It also links to key speeches and policy statements presented by world leaders regarding the HIV/AIDS crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Mr. Dowling's Electronic Passport: Deserts and the Sahel
Developed by a middle school teacher, this site is a virtual geography classroom. Among the topics covered are ancient, colonial, and modern Africa, with links to external sites at all levels of research.
- Elephants of Cameroon
African elephants (Loxodonta africana) joined the endangered species list in 1988. Concern for their survival arose after increasing ivory prices provoked unprecedented poaching during the 1970s. In little more than a decade, poachers killed more than half of Africa's elephants. This site is about a conservation program designed to help preserve this important species in Africa.
