- Soufriere Hills, Montserrat, West Indies
This site is maintained by the Michigan Technological University as part of their volcano-monitoring activity around the world. The Soufriere Hills volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat has been very active in recent years. This site contains links to information about the volcano itself, as well as many images of the volcano in various stages of eruption. Additionally, there are links to the Montserrat Tourist Information Board, a good site that illustrates the impact of geography on people, since much of the island has been evacuated due to the volcanic activity.
- Anguilla
The tiny island of Anguilla was discovered by Columbus in 1493. Anguilla had been granted independence by Great Britain but "fought" to become part of Britain again in 1967. Since the 1980's, Anguilla has becomes one of the trendier destinations in the Eastern Caribbean.
- Music of Martinique and Guadaloupe
Both overseas department s of France, Martinique and Guadaloupe are islands in the Lesser Antilles. Discovered by Columbus, the islands have been in French hands since the 1600s. Their unique cultural histories led to the development of several distinct and influential forms of music, such as gwo ka and zouk. This site provides links regarding musical groups as well as musical styles throughout the Caribbean.
- Nevis Interactive Map
Provided by the Nevis Tourism Board, this interactive map allows you to see each location on the tiny island simply by clicking on its name. Note the location in Charlestown of a Jewish cemetery and synagogue. These date from the late 1600's, when Jews of both Spanish descent and English descent were pressured to move from the nearby island of Barbados.
- Bahamas
Although this site appears to be set up for the basic purpose of attracting visitors (tourists) to the Bahamas, it contains a lot of information about this chain of islands off the southeast coast of the United States. You can find an overview of the history of the islands as well as items on local culture, local services, and how to get there.
- British Virgin Islands Government
The homepage of the colonial government of British Virgin Islands, this site provides several links to local political parties and regional media sources. It also provides historical and economic information from unique perspective. Click on "Road Town Charrette" for an insight into modern Caribbean urban renewal.
- Cuba News
Independent news from and about Cuba from a variety of international news sources help this site place a unique spotlight on life in modern Cuba. Parallel sites are offered in Spanish, French, and German, reflecting the dispersion of Cubans globally. Cuba also maintains its own ethnic minorities, whose issues can be found through a site search.
