In keeping with the theme of Chapter 11, these Web Links are designed to demonstrate just how exciting the discipline of geography is. These sites exemplify the many concepts presented in Terrestrial Flora and Fauna.
- Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems
This analysis determines the extent of agricultural land use and assesses the status of agroecosystems on a global basis. The report is the most comprehensive mapping of global agriculture to date. It also shows ways to better understand and monitor changes in the capacity of the systems to provide sustainable goods and services.
- Upper Midwest Gap Analysis Program
The goal of the Gap Analysis Program (GAP), under the auspices of the U.S. Geological Survey, "is to provide regional assessments of the conservation status of native vertebrate species and natural land cover types and to facilitate the
application of this information to land management activities." GAP uses GIS and remote sensing to conduct the regional analyses. All data derived from the program can be downloaded from the site.
- Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
Delve into information about ecosystems in the northern prairie of the United States. Information about plant and animal species, regional overviews, and resource management techniques.
- U.S. Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network
The Long Term Ecological Research Network is a collaborative research and education effort involving scientists and students studying ecological processes over long periods of time and broad geographic scales.
