 After reading, studying, and discussing Chapter 1, you should be able to:
- Describe the difference between weather and climate, and list the basic elements of both.
- List several atmospheric hazards.
- Describe each of Earth's four spheres, and discuss how they interact to produce the Earth system.
- Describe the Earth system and the difference between positive and negative feedback mechanisms.
- Summarize the composition of the atmosphere.
- Discuss the role of ozone in the atmosphere and the effects of ozone depletion.
- Describe the methods used to probe and investigate the atmosphere.
- Summarize the vertical structure of the atmosphere.
