Section 31.5, Communities: Looking at the Interactions of Many Populations

1. The point of this program is, of course, that all parts of an ecosystem are interconnected, and if one part is affected, others are likely to be affected as well. Select any other environment with which you are familiar. Then, select one plant or animal from that environment, and imagine that it was either driven extinct, or that its population was drastically reduced. Speculate what would happen to other organisms in the ecosystem as a consequence of this change.

To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.

2. In Section 31.5, the concept of the "keystone species" is discussed in your text. Do any of the organisms discussed in this program qualify as keystone species? Which one and why?
