Biology: A Guide to the Natural World

Chapter 1: Science as a Way of Learning: A Guide to the Natural World

Destinations

1.1 — How Does Science Impact the Everyday World?

You can easily see how rapidly the world of science and technology changes, and how those changes affect us, by using a variety of Web-based resources to follow "current science events." Nature (Nature science journals, http://www.nature.com/nature/) and Science (Science Now Home, http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/), premier international journals, offer daily news at their Websites. Other good science-based sites include ScienceDaily Magazine (http://www.sciencedaily.com/) and New Scientist (http://www.newscientist.com/). Most news organizations also have special science and technology sections. The Washington Post (washingtonpost.com: Science, http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/nation/science/) and CNN (CNN.com - Sci-Tech, http://www.cnn.com/TECH/) are good examples.

1.2 — What is Science?

To learn more about the scientific method, read the Studying Cells Tutorial at http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/tutorials/cells/cells1.html) and see the scientific method "in action."

1.4 — Special Qualities in Biology

This PBS program companion site http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/ describes many facets of evolution including evolutionary change, extinction and diversity. Hypothesis testing and scientific theories are discussed within the context of evolution.

Take a visual trip to the Ohio State University Museum of Biological Diversity at http://www.biosci.ohio-state.edu/~herb/museum/musehome.htm Encounter a wide range of organisms including the dust mite, the Ohio Buckeye tree and the firefly.
