PDB Molecules

Principles of Biochemistry, 4th Edition CW Chapter 6 -- Mechanisms of Enzymes

The Protein Data Bank serves as a worldwide repository for the experimentally determined three-dimensional structure of biological molecules. Files containing descriptions of the molecules have the extension ".PDB" and can be viewed using a web browser plug-in (see below) or with any of a number of free or commercial Molecular Graphics applications.

To view PDB files using your web browser, you need to ensure that a "plug-in" application called Chime is installed. The Chime plug-in is available from Elsevier MDL. Click here to obtain the Chime plug-in. Refer to the system requirements for additional information. If your Browser application or Operating System doesn't support the Chime plug-in, you can still view the molecules by downloading the PDB files to disk and opening them using a molecular graphics application. Windows users can save files by right-clicking on the link and selecting "Save as..." from the pop-up menu. Macintosh users should hold down the Control (Ctrl) key, while simultaneously clicking on the link and choose "Download to disk..." from the pop-up menu.
