Chapter 52: Biodiversity and Conservation

Applying Ideas

This is an on-line version of the same Applying Ideas questions included at the end of the chapter in your textbook. Use this version to quickly and easily submit your work to your instructor or teaching assistant.

1. The introduction to this chapter (pages 1003 to 1004 in your textbook) stated that its goal was to introduce the information needed to help preserve biodiversity. To test whether this goal was achieved, think of a species that is endangered in the region surrounding your college or university. Then answer the following questions: What are the primary factors responsible for the species' decline? Are these factors similar to or different from the factors responsible for concern about diversity in tropical rain forests? If you were a conservation manager, what steps would you take to ensure that the remaining population did not become inbred? How would you go about designing a regional conservation plan for this species and for other organisms that occupy the same habitat?

2. In your opinion, of the several reasons for preserving biodiversity listed in this chapter, which is the most persuasive? Explain your reasoning.

3. Projections for ecological disaster are contingent on the continuation of both the present trends in human population growth and in habitat destruction. Do you believe these trends will continue? In general, are you optimistic or pessimistic about the future of biodiversity?

4. Suppose you were assigned to assist a team of biologists commissioned to design a series of reserves in a tropical country. List the series of steps you would recommend for gathering data and creating a plan that would protect a large number of species in a small amount of land.

5. The maps shown on page 1017 chronicle the loss of old-growth (200 years old) forest that occurred in Warwickshire, England, and in the United States during recent intervals. In your opinion, under what conditions is it ethical for conservationists who live in these countries to lobby government officials in Brazil, Indonesia, and other tropical countries to slow the rate of loss of old-growth forest?

6. Make a list of characteristics that would render a species particularly vulnerable to extinction by humans. Make a list of characteristics that would render a species particularly resistant to pressure from humans. Try to think of an example of each.
