Chapter 35: Activities

Activity 35.1 Plant Hormones

CDA35_1.jpg Plant hormones, like animal hormones, are organic molecules that are active in low concentrations at target sites removed from the site of their synthesis. Hormones function as signal molecules and developmental regulators; they control such processes as photo-, thigmo-, and gravitropism as well as seed germination and leaf senescence. In this activity, which uses auxin indole acetic acid as an example, you’ll view the basic principles of hormone structure, transport, and activity.
