Chapter 26: Viruses

Conceptual Review

This is an on-line version of the same Conceptual Review questions included at the end of the chapter in your textbook. Use this version to quickly and easily submit your work to your instructor or teaching assistant.

1. The outer surface of a virus consists of either a membrane-like envelope or a protein coat called a capsid. Look back at Figure 26.3c (page 504) and at Figure 26.5a in your textbook (page 507) to examine these structures. Which type of outer surface does HIV have? Which type do bacteriophages have?

To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.

2. Look at Figure 26.3c and at Figure 26.5a again (pages 504 and 507 in your textbook), and compare the morphological complexity of HIV with that of bacteriophage T4. Which virus would you predict has the larger genome? Why?

To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.

3. Explain why viral diseases are difficult to treat compared with diseases caused by bacteria.

To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.

4. What type of data convinced researchers that HIV originated when a simian immunodeficiency virus "jumped" to humans? Do you agree with this conclusion? Why or why not?

To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.
