While translation is in progress, proteins fold into their three-dimensional conformation (tertiary structure), sometimes with the aid of chaperone proteins. Some proteins are targeted to specific locations in the cell by the presence of signal sequences, while others remain in an inactive form until modified by phosphorylation or the removal of certain amino acids.
