Activity 52.1 Species-Area Curves

CDA52_1.jpg In this activity, you’ll examine the relationship between species diversity and habitat size using a graph known as a species-area curve. While studying the diversity of bird species on islands in Southeast Asia, ecologists observed that larger islands tended to have more species than smaller islands. This is a specific example of a more general ecological phenomenon—larger habitat areas tend to be more species-rich than smaller habitat areas. This activity gives you the opportunity to examine data obtained from islands of Southeast Asia and to explore how an island’s area affects species diversity.
