Activity 51.1 The Global Carbon Cycle

CDA51_1.jpg The global carbon cycle is a description of how carbon—in the form of both organic and inorganic molecules—moves between the atmosphere and the ocean, rocks, and biota. The carbon cycle has been extensively studied in recent years because human activities such as the burning of fossil fuel have released large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. This accumulation of carbon in the atmosphere is expected to lead to a rise in the Earth’s temperature, because carbon in the atmosphere has the ability to trap heat.
