Activity 16.1 Human Genome Sequencing Strategies

CDA16_1.jpg The human genome consists of approximately three billion base pairs of DNA. Some of this DNA functions as the code for the approximately 30,000 human genes. The function of the rest is largely unknown. However, both types of DNA sequences provide insights into our evolution, our functioning, and the causes of human genetic disease. Two groups of researchers, using two different strategies, took on the monumental task of sequencing the genome. One strategy, called map-based sequencing, is the primary subject of this activity.
