Activity 9.1 Meiosis

CDA9_1.jpg Meiosis is a cell division process preceding sexual reproduction, in which a diploid cell divides into genetically unique haploid cells—eggs or sperm. Because meiosis reduces the number of chromosome sets by half, it is called a reduction division. Meiosis also produces a great deal of genetic diversity. Both of these traits distinguish meiosis from mitosis, a cell division process used by most of the body’s cells. In this activity, you’ll observe the events of meiosis and compare how they differ from those of mitosis.
