Activity 8.2 Phases of Mitosis

CDA8_2.jpg All cells reproduce by division. An important challenge for all cells is reproducing the genome faithfully in the daughter cells. In eukaryotes, chromosomes containing the genetic information are replicated during the S phase of the cell cycle. Two complete sets of all DNA molecules in the nucleus are generated. The complication lies in segregating these two sets, so that the nuclei of the daughters each get one complete set. Chromosomal segregation involves a coordinated series of events in which chromosomes condense to avoid damage or loss, spindle fibers are created to transport the chromosomes to opposite poles of the cell, and new nuclear membranes form around each chromosome set to complete the segregation and prepare for the final cell fission.
