Chapter 8: Activities

Activity 8.1 The Cell Cycle

CDA8_1.jpg The cell cycle is a series of steps in which the cell is prepared to reproduce itself by mitosis. During the cell cycle, the DNA in chromosomes is replicated. The resulting sister chromatids are then segregated into the nuclei of the two daughter cells such that one copy of each chromosome is included in both daughter cells. Careful control is maintained at checkpoints during certain stages of the cell cycle to ensure that DNA replication is complete, that DNA molecules are undamaged, and that the partitioning of chromatids into the future daughter cells is done correctly.
