Cells use a variety of metabolic
pathways to derive energy from the sugar glucose. The pathway that produces the most
energy is cellular respiration, which includes glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, the electron
transport chain, and ATP synthase. Cellular respiration occurs only when oxygen is
available. During this process, glucose is completely broken down and many ATP
molecules are formed. In the absence of oxygen, cells may employ various fermentation
pathwaysall of which are extremely inefficient compared with cellular respiration.
