Objectives
After studying this chapter, you should
  1. be able to use Newton’s second law in terms of linear momentum.
  2. be able to apply the relationship between impulse and linear momentum.
  3. be able to use the conservation of momentum to analyze elastic and inelastic collisions.
  4. be able to determine the center of mass of a system of discrete particles and certain continuous distributions of matter.
  5. be able to apply Newton’s laws to the motion of the center of mass of a system.
  6. be able to determine the speed of a rocket after a certain amount of fuel has be expelled.
