Objectives
After studying this chapter, you should
  1. be able to calculate changes in the potential energy functions for gravity and Hooke’s law.
  2. be able to analyze mechanical problems using the principle of the conservation of total mechanical energy.
  3. be able to understand the information contained in energy diagrams.
  4. be able to apply the concepts of work and energy in the presence of nonconservative forces.
