A 13-hour plane flight from Perth (in western Australia) to New York City would arrive at the exact same time and on the exact same date as it originally took off. Taking into account travel time, time zones, and the International Date Line, explain how this can be possible. Assume that daylight saving time is not an issue in your answer. You may need to use the time zone map in your text (Fig. 1.17) or at http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/world_tzones.html.

Many companies have developed hardware and software for vehicles that integrate the global positioning system (GPS) with geographic information systems (GIS). In short, this not only gives the user their current location (GPS), but it also tells them where they are in relation to anything else on the map (GIS). Further, these systems are usually searchable, either onboard or through a mobile phone call to a central operator. Suggest several specific uses of such a system. How might a handheld system be useful to a hiker? A blind person?

Have you ever tried to color in countries or states on a map with a few colors, only to end up coloring two adjacent countries the same color because you ran out of colors?
