Elementary Algebra for College Students: Early Graphing, 2/e

Chapter 9: Roots and Radicals

Warm Up 9.6

1. Find the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose legs have lengths of 9m6q1.gif and 9m6q1_2.gif

2. A basketball court measures 94 feet by 50 feet. Find the diagonal the court to the nearest tenth of a foot.

3. Find the length of segment PQ if coordinates of P are (–1, 3) and coordinates of Q are (4, 11)

4. The speed of an automobile can be estimated using the formula from physics 9m6q4.gif where S is measured in miles per hour and c is the coefficient of friction between the tires and road and l is the length of the longest skid mark of the car.

Suppose that c = 0.6 and l = 60 feet. Estimate the speed of the automobile under these conditions.

5. The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 12 inches and one leg of this triangle is 9 inches. Find the length of the remaining leg of the triangle. Express answer in simplified radical form.

Answer choices in this exercise are randomized and will appear in a different order each time the page is loaded.
