Audio Glossary

anemia A shortage of red blood cells

artery Blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart

blood pressure The force of the blood pushing against the walls of the blood vessels; the force of the blood exerted on the inner walls of the arteries, veins, and chambers of the heart as blood flows or circulates through the structures

cardiac Pertaining to the heart

circulation The continuous movements of blood through the heart and blood vessels to all parts of the body

circulatory system The heart, blood vessels, blood, and all organs that pump and carry blood and other fluids throughout the body

heart A four-chambered, hollow, muscular organ that lies in the chest cavity and pumps the blood through the lungs and into all parts of the body

plasma The liquid portion of the blood

pulmonary Pertaining to the lungs

respiratory system The group of body organs that carries on the body function of respiration; the system brings oxygen into the body and eliminates carbon dioxide

tuberculosis (TB) A highly infectious disease that usually affects the lungs

vein Blood vessel that carries blood from parts of the body back to the heart
