abnormal
departure from a normal state.

antineoplastic
against development of a tumor.

appendicitis
inflammation of the appendix.

arterial
pertaining to an artery.

arteriocarditis
inflammation of an artery of the heart.

arteriology
study of arteries.

arteriopathy
a disease of arteries.

arteriovenous
pertaining to arteries and veins.

arthritis
inflammation of one or more joints.

arthrology
the study of joints.

arthropathy
a disease of joints.

axilla
the underarm or armpit region.

bilateral
pertaining to both sides of a body part.

cardiac
pertaining to the heart.

cardiology
study of the heart.

cardiopathic
pertaining to a disease of the heart.

carditis
inflammation of the heart.

combining form
the combination of a word root and a combining vowel.

combining vowel
a single letter that follows a word root, and serves to connect the word root.

diagnosis
an estimated identification of a disease.

endocardial
pertaining to the membrane lining the inside of the heart.

endocarditis
inflammation of the inner lining of the heart.

ganglia
a cluster of neurons outside the central nervous system.

gastric
pertaining to the stomach.

gastritis
inflammation of the stomach.

gastrohepatic
pertaining to the stomach and liver.

gastrology
study of the stomach.

hepatitis
inflammation of the liver.

hypergastric
pertaining to a stomach excess.

hypertension
persistently high blood pressure. It includes essential hypertension, in which the condition is not traceable to a single cause, and secondary hypertension, in which the high blood pressure is caused by the effects of another disease, such as atherosclerosis.

intravenous
within a vein.

myocardium
a layer of the heart wall composed of cardiac muscle tissue.

osteitis
inflammation of bone.

osteoarthropathy
a disease of bone and joints.

pathology
the study of disease.

prefix
a word part that is placed before the root to modify its meaning.

suffix
a word part that is placed after the root to modify its meaning.

word root
the part of a word that contains its primary meaning.
