You are about to be asked to join a discussion. More accurately, you will be asked to choose a topic for a scholarly discussion, something controversial that you are very interested in; locate and read available background information from former and ongoing academic discussions; and contribute your part to the discussion at hand. This will be your contribution to the field of scholarly discourse. As you develop your research topic, you will need to develop a series of well-conceived and intelligent questions. For it is by asking questions that you will be able to develop a point of view, locate data, and develop a body of information. From there you will create knowledge and add that knowledge to the knowledge bank in a particular academic field. As you begin working on the exercises and readings that follow, remember that asking new questions—even of old material—may bring you to new places in a scholarly conversation or discourse.
