Overview
|
Disability affects nearly 15 percent of all infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents. Increasingly, teachers in today's schools are interacting with a variety of disabilities on a daily basis. As we progress into a new era of accountability with public education it is essential that classroom teachers understand the systems in which they work. Today's special education system is a complex web that involves many different stakeholders. This chapter will let you interact with a profile of special education in today's schools, introduce you to the different categories of disabilities, provide an overview of the characteristics of students with disabilities, and lay the foundation for understanding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and its related outcomes for students with disabilities.
