Annotated Web Links

Our Websites are recommended and continually reviewed by co-author Dr. Lisa Raufman. In this first chapter, you will find the total list of the web links that are found in each of the chapters' web links. Therefore, you will not find any specific "Chapter 1 Web links" but a chapter by chapter list starting with Chapter 2. You can use this chapter as a reference for career related Websites. If you can't remember in which chapter you found a favorite link, this chapter's Web links will help you find it. If you are new to using the Internet or "Web surfing," this list of Websites should make it easier for you to find career information. However, if you want to search for more sites, keep the following in mind.

If you want information about search engines in general, the best site to visit is SearchEngineWatch. It includes tutorials on how to use the search engines or how to improve your use of their search capabilities. Especially useful is the Search Engine Reviews Chart, to see which search engines have been rated highest. One of my favorite search engines is MetaCrawler. MetaCrawler sends your query to ten search engines simultaneously (About.com, AltaVista, Excite, Google, Infoseek, LookSmart, Lycos, Thunderstone, Web-Crawler, and Yahoo!) There are other "metasearch" sites or engines (e.g., AllinOne, Ask Jeeves, Dogpile, Google, Job-Search-Engine, Metasearch Northern Light, SavvySearch, WebInfoSearch, NetSearch, etc.), but you will find that you will want to use only one or two on a regular basis (unless you are a very investigative type of person).

Luckily, you should not need to look beyond the Web links in each chapter. I have written an annotated bibliography about some of the most useful and dependable Websites to help you satisfactorily complete the Career Fitness Program. The information I really like at each site is listed after the Website. I have clustered the sites into the following categories:

Megasites: good general information for all chapters
General and Personality Assessment: to supplement Chapters 3–5
College Majors: to supplement Chapters 6 and 7
Occupational Descriptions/Job Market Information: for Chapters 7–10
Career and Job Search Information: for Chapters 7–9
Other Useful Sites for Making Decisions: for Chapters 7–11

Important tips in using these Web addresses:

  1. Websites do become obsolete. However, if your browser says that a page cannot be found or does not exist, try using a different browser (e.g., change from MSN to Ask.com).
  2. Sometimes you cannot get into a site because you are "surfing the Net" during a busy time of day and too many people are trying to access that site. Go back to that site some other time of day or night.
  3. If a Website cannot be opened and it is related to a university, go to the university site. For example, www.fresno.edu/dept/CRC can also be found by going to www.fresno.edu and going to Departments, then to Career Resources Center. Often on the home page for a college or university there will be a site map or a site reference box where you can type in Career Center or Career Resource Center.
  4. I highly recommend "surfing" the career centers at universities or community colleges in the region where you would like to eventually work; http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/state/, www.clas.ufl.edu/CLAS/american-universities.html, and www.review.com have search engines to find university sites.
  5. As you read each chapter, go to the Career Fitness Chapter link and you will find Websites to explore that will reinforce and supplement the information in the text. All chapters are listed in this first chapter.

Information on Majors

Be sure that you have used Monster.com, Review.com, and Jobweb.com to find lists of careers related to majors. Other sites, such as Portland University, show the types of majors and careers that their students have gotten. If you go to the Website of most university and college career centers, you will find varying amounts of information on careers related to majors or careers of current graduates. It is also useful to look at the employer recruitment "board" on these sites because employers often indicate which majors they are hiring. A high-tech firm might indicate that it is hiring engineers, computer scientists, and liberal arts majors. Some college career centers have a link for "Job Fairs" where they list employers, their job needs, and a link to the employer's Website.

An example is http://www.fresno.edu – go to Services and then Career Services Center and click on Undergraduate students. Useful categories include Career Exploration and the Internet link as well as the Job search areas related to Internships, Interview Skills, Job Listings, Job Search Techniques, and Occupational Information. The latter category includes business, sciences, biology, environmental studies, teaching, and social work links.

The following are specific sites related to majors:
