Making the Case for Technology Integration
Making the Case for Technology Integration
This activity contains 2 questions.
The following quote highlights critical professional development needs regarding using technology to enhance the academic performance of students with disabilities: "Given pressures exerted by regulations from IDEA and No Child Left Behind (2001), the need to develop specific methods that address general curriculum standards for special education students cannot be overstated. Special education professional training opportunities and experiences should be restructured to include methods that promote access to the general curriculum through the support possible by classroom uses of technology. This technology training must be curriculum specific, integrated across subject areas, and actively engage learners" (Puckett, 2004, p. 15).
Do you feel you have adequate preparation to use technology to enhance the learning of all students in your classroom? In which areas do you feel most confident in your technology skills for differentiating instruction? In which areas do you feel most uncomfortable with your current skills and how might these deficits impact student achievement in specific content areas?

The following quote summarizes some of the current challenges associated with measuring the outcomes of assistive technology: "The continued scarcity of funding resources for assistive technology assessments, equipment, and training portends the need for predictive algorithms that can facilitate decision-making by practitioners, reimbursement agencies, and consumers" (Lenker & Paquet, 2003, p. 13). What do these authors mean by "predictive algorithms"? What decision making can these algorithms help facilitate?
