Making the Case for Technology Integration
This activity contains 2 questions.
Durden (2001) says that ". . . no existing form of distance learning can similarly affirm students as individuals and also force them to acknowledge the ideas of others. . . . Disenfranchised students, as much as their affluent and advantaged peers, deserve a chance at a residential, liberal education—not an unproven alternative." What evidence can you cite to contradict Durden's belief that distance learning cannot help students acknowledge each others' ideas? How would you respond to Durden's criticisms of distance learning as an unproven alternative to face-to-face education?

The following is a quote from the report
Fool's Gold: A Critical Look at Computers and Childhood
by the Alliance for Childhood: "Those who place their faith in technology to solve the problems of education should look more deeply into the needs of children. The renewal of education requires personal attention to students from good teachers and active parents, strongly supported by their communities. It requires commitment to developmentally appropriate education and attention to the full range of children's real low-tech needs—physical, emotional, and social, as well as cognitive" (Cordes & Miller, 2000, p. 4). In light of the increasing importance of the Internet as an information resource and an instrument for students' research, how would you respond to this statement?
