In his essay in Wired magazine ("PowerPoint Is Evil: Power Corrupts. PowerPoint Corrupts Absolutely"), Edward Tufte (2003) opines, "Alas, slideware often reduces the analytical quality of presentations. In particular, the popular PowerPoint templates (ready-made designs) usually weaken verbal and spatial reasoning, and almost always corrupt statistical analysis. . . . Particularly disturbing is the adoption of the PowerPoint cognitive style in our schools. Rather than learning to write a report using sentences, children are being taught how to formulate client pitches and infomercials." What do you think causes poor classroom use of PowerPoint? What would you recommend teachers do to make sure students are using it effectively?
