acetabulum   Cup-shaped socket of the hipbone into which the thighbone fits

achondroplasia   Defect in the formation of cartilage at the epiphyses of long bones

acroarthritis   Inflammation of the joints of the hands or feet

acromion   Projection of the spine of the scapula that forms the point of the shoulder and articulates with the clavicle

ankylosis   Condition of stiffening of a joint

arthralgia   Pain in a joint

arthritis   Inflammation of a joint

arthrocentesis   Surgical puncture of a joint for removal of fluid

arthroplasty   Surgical repair of a joint

bursitis   Inflammation of a bursa

calcaneal   Pertaining to the heel bone

carpals   Pertaining to the wrist bones

chondral   Pertaining to cartilage

chondrocostal   Pertaining to the rib cartilage

clavicular   Pertaining to the clavicle (collar bone)

coccygeal   Pertaining to the coccyx (tailbone)

coccygodynia   Pain in the coccyx (tailbone)

collagen   Fibrous insoluble protein found in the connective tissue, skin, ligaments, and cartilage

connective   Pertaining to connecting or binding together

costosternal   Pertaining to a rib and the sternum

craniectomy   Surgical excision of a portion of the skull

craniotomy   Incision into the skull

dactylogram   Fingerprint

femoral   Pertaining to the femur (thighbone), the longest bone in the body

fibular   Pertaining to the fibula, smaller of the two lower leg bones

humeral   Pertaining to the humerus (upper arm bone)

hydrarthrosis   Accumulation of watery fluid in the cavity of a joint

iliac   Pertaining to the ilium

iliosacral   Pertaining to the ilium and the sacrum

intercostal   Pertaining to between the ribs

ischial   Pertaining to the ischium (hip)

ischialgia   Pain in the ischium (hip)

kyphosis   Humpback

laminectomy   Surgical excision of a vertebral posterior arch

lordosis   Abnormal anterior curvature of the spine

lumbar   Pertaining to the loins (lower back)

lumbodynia   Pain in the loins (lower back)

mandibular   Pertaining to the lower jawbone

maxillary   Pertaining to the upper jawbone

metacarpals   Pertaining to the bones of the hand

metacarpectomy   Surgical excision of one or more bones of the hand

myelitis   Inflammation of the bone marrow

myeloma   Tumor of the bone marrow

myelopoiesis   Formation of bone marrow

olecranal   Pertaining to the elbow

orthopedics   Branch of medicine concerned with diseases and disorders involving locomotor structures of the body

orthopedist   Physician who specializes in orthopedics

osteoarthritis   Inflammation of the bone and joint

osteoblast   Bone-forming cell

osteocarcinoma   Cancerous tumor of a bone; new growth of epithelial tissue

osteochondritis   Inflammation of the bone and cartilage

osteogenesis   Formation of bone

osteomalacia   Softening of the bones

osteomyelitis   Inflammation of the bone marrow

osteopenia   Deficiency of bone tissue regardless of the cause

osteoporosis   Condition that results in reduction of bone mass

osteosarcoma   Malignant tumor of the bone; cancer arising from connective tissue

osteotome   Instrument used for cutting bone

patellar   Pertaining to the patella (kneecap)

pedal   Pertaining to the foot

periosteoedema   Swelling around a bone

phalangeal   Pertaining to the bones of the fingers and the toes

polyarthritis   Inflammation of more than one joint

rachigraph   Instrument used to measure the curvature of the spine

radial   Pertaining to the radius (lateral lower arm bone in line with the thumb); describes a pulse found on the thumb side of the arm

scapular   Pertaining to the shoulder blade

scoliosis   Condition of lateral curvature of the spine; characteristics include asymmetry of the trunk, uneven shoulders and hips, a one-sided rib hump, and a prominent scapula

spinal   Pertaining to the spine

spondylitis   Inflammation of one or more vertebrae

sternal   Pertaining to the sternum (breastbone)

sternotomy   Surgical incision of the sternum (breastbone)

subclavicular   Pertaining to beneath the clavicle (collar bone)

subcostal   Pertaining to beneath the ribs

submaxilla   Below the jaw or mandible

symphysis   State of growing together

tendonitis   Inflammation of a tendon

tennis elbow   Chronic condition characterized by pain caused by excessive pronation and supination activities of the forearm; usually caused by strain, as in playing tennis

tibial   Pertaining to the tibia (shin bone); larger of the two bones of the lower leg

ulnar   Pertaining to the ulna (medial lower arm bone) or to the nerve or the artery named from it; located on the little finger side of the arm

ulnocarpal   Pertaining to the ulna side of the wrist

vertebral   Pertaining to a vertebra

vertebrosternal   Pertaining to a vertebra and the sternum

xiphoid   Literally means resembling a sword; the lowest portion of the sternum; a sword-shaped cartilaginous process supported by bone
