Breast self-examination
(BSE) A manual examination conducted monthly by a woman to evaluate her own breasts for signs of masses, changes, nipple discharge, or evidence of abnormalities.
Colposcopy
The use of an instrument inserted into the vagina to examine the cervical and vaginal tissues by means of a magnifying lens.
Cystocele
The downward displacement of the bladder, which appears as a bulge in the anterior vaginal wall.
Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) Abnormal uterine bleeding
A condition characterized by anovulatory cycles with abnormal uterine bleeding that does not have a demonstrable organic cause.
Dyspareunia
Painful intercourse.
Endometriosis
Recommended monthly procedure by which women may detect changes or abnormalities in their breasts.
Fibrocystic breast disease
Benign breast changes characterized by bilateral, cyclic breast pain and breast nodularities that may be unilateral or bilateral, and often in the upper outer quadrants of the breasts.
Galactorrhea
Nipple discharge.
Hysterectomy
Surgical removal of the uterus.
Mammogram
A soft tissue radiograph of the breast without the injection of a contrast medium.
Pap smear
Procedure to detect the presence of cancer of the uterus by microscopic examination of cells gently scraped from the cervix.
Toxic shock syndrome
(TSS) Infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus, found primarily in women of reproductive age.
