  • Describe the role of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
  • Explain the role of complementary and alternative therapies in promoting wellness, prevention, and holistic healing.
  • Delineate the risks of using complementary and alternative therapies.
  • Compare the basic principles and components of naturopathy, homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, and ayurvedic medicine.
  • Describe the use of biofeedback, hypnosis, meditation, prayer, visualization, and guided imagery in promoting the well-being of childbearing families.
  • Contrast the different body-based therapies, including chiropractic, craniosacral therapy, the Alexander technique, Feldenkreis, massage, reflexology, hatha yoga, and regular physical exercise.
  • Explain the advantages and disadvantages to childbearing women of therapies involving ingestion of substances such as foods, dietary supplements, herbs, flower essences, and homeopathic remedies.
  • Distinguish between acupressure and acupuncture.
  • Distinguish between Reiki and therapeutic touch.
  • Discuss complementary therapies appropriate for the nurse to use with childbearing families.
