Ethical Dilemma

"Why Don't My Kids Get Their Fair Share?"

Latisha is a novice first-grade teacher in Rocky Springs School District. Her class of twenty-eight students includes fifteen Hispanic students, nine African American students, and four Vietnamese students. Latisha's room is sparsely furnished, many of the tables and chairs need repair, and the classroom library of thirty-seven books is old and worn. Last week at an orientation for pre-K–3 teachers held across town at the new elementary school, Latisha learned that the students there are 90 percent white and class size averages nineteen. A tour of the classrooms revealed the latest in furniture, learning materials, and technology with well-stocked classroom libraries. Latisha is concerned about the unequal distribution of resources in the school district, and she feels her children are not getting their fair share.
