A passcoded Instructor Section with a Microsoft PowerPoint slide presentation package and an Instructor's Solutions Manual
All three supplements can be viewed directly on the book's website site, or can be downloaded from this site and printed. Once the exercises have been downloaded, the students can work through the activities and the instructor can save, edit and/or share the solutions files and powerpoints.
Student Section: The Student Exercise Workbook
The Student Exercise Workbook, also presented in Microsoft Excel format, is designed to facilitate the students learning process. The Student Exercise Workbook provides partial, or intermediate, answers for those exercises, short problems, and long problems for which such intermediate answers are appropriate. Thus, for the longer exercises and problems, students will know, as they progress, whether they are developing the solution correctly. In the case of the shorter exercises or problems only the final answer is provided.
Lined blank pages with corresponding question numbers are provided for the questions at the end of each chapter. Thus students will be able to write in the appropriate answers and keep them, together with the solutions to the exercises and problems, all in one workbook - either on a computer disk, or as a workbook that they print, or both. Please note that you may need to adjust the page setup options in the file in order to print it out.
Providing students with partial solutions serves to encourage them along their learning path. We are constantly asked for such assistance by our students, and have found that, when provided, it does in fact facilitate learning.
Providing these partial solutions in a Microsoft Excel format is even more beneficial because it enables those students who can use Microsoft Excel to more easily solve them using Excels calculation and copy features. It also enables students to easily copy exercises or problems to another worksheet, modify them, and attempt to solve the modified exercises or problems, thus expanding their learning experience. In fact an instructor might assign as homework the task of producing, in Microsoft Excel, modified versions of the exercises and problems in this exercise workbook. To avoid excluding those students who do not know how to use Microsoft Excel this type of work might be assigned to groups, being careful that there is at least one student in each group who is familiar with Microsoft Excel. For those students who do not know how to use Excel it serves to encourage them to learn to use it. The ability to use spreadsheets is an essential ability for managers in todays wired world.
It is suggested that some of the Long Problems be assigned for students to solve in groups and report on the solution in class. This encourages the interaction of students in class. It also makes these longer problems less onerous and time-consuming - while providing students with the broader learning experience of dealing with problems of more realistic complexity.
As all accounting instructors are aware repetition is an essential part of learning accounting. Placing a blank workbook in downloadable worksheet format on the web enables students to attempt to solve a problem repetitively without any hassle. Students should be encouraged to keep this workbook, on a disk or in printed form, to consult later, should they ever have need to review their college work - something that many of our graduates tell us they find it frequently necessary and fruitful to do.
We would appreciate your feedback concerning this textbook and its supplements. You may email us at either: moncarze@fiu.edu, or at portocar@fiu.edu. Your suggestions will be helpful in making the learning experience of our students easier and more beneficial, and in facilitating our work as professors of accounting.
The publisher will give the necessary instructions for accessing this site. The Microsoft PowerPoint slide presentation package and the Instructor's Solutions Manual will be accessible only by the instructor. The instructor may, of course, make copies of any parts of these supplements and make them available to students by posting them on the instructors own website.
