COGNITIVE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of this lesson, the EMT-Basic student will be able to:

3-1.4 Discuss common mechanisms of injury/ nature of illness. (pp. 730–742)
* Explain how the following affect the force of impact: mass and velocity, acceleration and deceleration, energy changing form and direction. (pp. 727–728)
* Describe the three main impacts that occur in a vehicle collision. (pp. 729–730)
* Discuss the following mechanisms of injury and their effects on the human body: motor vehicle collisions, vehicle–pedestrian collisions, motorcycle collisions, falls, penetrating injuries, and blast injuries. (pp. 730–742)
* Discuss the steps of patient assessment, including the priority decision, as they relate to and are guided by the mechanism of injury. (p. 743) Objective 3-1.4 and additional objectives from DOT Lesson 3-1 are addressed in Chapter 8, "Scene Size-up."
