After completing his teaching certificate, Martin searched for a job in his hometown. He found a job teaching middle level social studies and language arts. Martin's first love was social studies, but he knew that if his students were proficient readers of the social studies materials that he assigned, they would understand the subject much better. Therefore, he connected the reading strategies that he taught in language arts in his social studies class.
