Developing Your Knowledge about Critical Readers
Teaching Case

Tyrone, a preservice teacher, didn't read much when he was in school. He spent much of his time playing sports and writing for the school newspaper. Although Tyrone excelled in school, he only read class assignment, and read few books on his own.

As he began his educational methods classes, Tyrone came to understand that he needed to motivate himself to read young adult novels and to become a reading role model. This issue was underscored when Tyrone observed a language arts class in a nearby middle school. Tyrone was impressed with the teacher's knowledge of books and the students' enthusiasm for reading. Tyrone knew he needed to update his own knowledge base before beginning to student teach.
