Developing Your Knowledge about Interpretive Readers
Teaching Case

Juan, a first-year teacher, accepted a job in a fifth-grade classroom that had a high percentage of native Spanish speakers. Since Juan was fluent in Spanish, he believed he would have no difficulty connecting with the students and teaching them how to become engaged in text. When he met his students, however, he found that his background was very different from the background of most of his students and that his students spoke a dialect of Spanish that was hard for him to understand. To complicate matters, Juan found that his students did not like to read – either in Spanish or in English. Juan was committed to helping his students become proficient readers who loved books. He was able to draw on his knowledge about reading processes with Interpretive Readers to accomplish this goal.
