Statistical Techniques for Analyzing Quantitative Data

Quantitative research tries to make better sense of the world by using numbers. These numbers are used to represent aspects of the observable physical world, such as people's heights or numbers of people engaging in a particular activity. We also use numbers to represent nonphysical phenomena, such as intelligence, academic achievement, and so on. When we do research, we frequently need to summarize and interpret these numbers by using a group of computational procedures housed in the academic discipline called statistics. This chapter is an introduction to the quantification of data and the interpretation of these data through the use of statistics.
