Qualitative Research
Overview

Qualitative research encompasses several approaches to research that are, in some respects, quite different from one another. Yet all qualitative approaches have two things in common. First, they focus on phenomena that occur in natural settings—that is, in the "real world." Second, they involve studying those phenomena in all their complexity. Five common qualitative research designs are discussed: case study, ethnography, phenomenological study, grounded theory study, and content analysis. How to conduct qualitative studies is discussed along with criteria for evaluating the worth of a qualitative study.
