Choose an age group within early childhood and observe understanding of self and others. Reflect on what you see and hear, then apply the appropriate strategies.

Evidence that children are working on developing a better understanding of self and others.
Equipment, materials, or activities that facilitate an understanding of self or others.
Go to MyEducationLab and select the topic "Child Development," then watch the video "Intrinsic Motivation" and observe a primary-age boy discussing his motivation.

Reflect
Think about and respond to the following questions:
How important is an understanding of self to overall development for young children?
Did you notice differences between children regarding their interest in understanding others?
What might be the reason for these differences?
Are the equipment, materials, and activities available in early childhood classrooms important parts of how children learn about themselves and others?

What do the child's responses tell you about his sense of self?

Apply
Verbalize aspects of self as you work with young children.
Give children opportunities to interact with others.
Plan the environment so children have opportunities to understand themselves and others better.
