After completing this chapter, you should be able to:

  1. Define the term electronic medical record (EMR).
  2. Define the term electronic health record (EHR).
  3. Define the term computer-based patient record (CPR).
  4. Discuss the similarities and differences between the EHR and the CPR.
  5. Understand the 12 characteristics of the CPR, as defined by the Institute of Medicine.
  6. Discuss the benefits associated with the EHR.
  7. Review the current status of the EHR, including impediments.
  8. List several concerns that must be resolved before implementation of the EHR.
  9. Discuss the personal health record (PHR).
  10. Compare and contrast the relationship between the PHR and EHR.
