American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)

The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) is the oldest and largest (23,000 members) professional family therapy organization in the world (Nichols, 1992; Northey, 2004b). It was initially established in 1942 as the American Association of Marriage Counselors (AAMC).

American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA)

The American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA) was founded by Murray Bowen in 1977. Its stated objectives include: advancing theories and therapies that regard the entire family as a unit; promoting research and professional education in family therapy and allied fields; making information about family therapy available to practitioners in other fields of knowledge and to the public; fostering the cooperation of all who are concerned with the medical, psychological, social, legal, and other needs of the family; and promoting the science and practice of family therapy.

Division 43 of the American Psychological Association: Family Psychology

Division 43 (Family Psychology) of the American Psychological Association (APA) was established to enable psychologists who worked with families to keep their identity as psychologists (Kaslow, 1990). As a division, Family Psychology includes approximately 3,000 practitioners and academicians who are concerned with the science, practice, public interest, and education of psychologists who work with families.

International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC)

The International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC) is a division of the American Counseling Association (ACA). IAMFC membership is interdisciplinary. The major elements common to the approximately 4,000 members include professional training in marriage and family counseling/therapy and an interest/involvement in working with couples and families directly or tangentially. Members participate in regional and national conferences sponsored by the IAMFC and the ACA. In addition, the IAMFC has developed national training standards accepted by its membership and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

National Council on Family Relations

The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) is the oldest professional association dedicated to working with families. It was established in 1939, and many of its members helped to create and support the AAMFT (Nichols, 1992). Throughout its history, the NCFR has concentrated on education. Its membership is interdisciplinary and includes family life educators, sociologists, family researchers, and family therapists.

The Ackerman Institute for the Family

This site serves as an information clearinghouse for institute activity including events, training, summary of services, and resource materials. The Ackerman Institute, located in New York City, records approximately 11,000 patient visits per year for a broad range of family issues.

The Bowen Center
