The family described below will provide situations for clinical application with each of the theories. Look for the situation in the “Critical Thinking” section of each theory chapter on this website. In each situation you should: Decide where the nurse would be in contact with the individual and/or other members of the familyfor example, in the home, at school, in the emergency room, in the physicians office? Think about how nursing care delivery would be influenced by using the indicated theoryfor example, does the theory provide a specific guide to practice or to areas of practice? would certain assessment data be collected or missed? Are there certain kinds of actions that would or would not be taken? Would evaluation be included? Discuss, in writing, the strengths and weaknesses of this particular theory for use in clinical practice in this particular situation. Note: The situations were randomly selected and may or may not provide a good fit with the theory. This is intended as a critical thinking exercise to assist you in thinking about using theory in practice and in identifying what works, or does not work, for you. The Smith family
