Critical Thinking Exercises

A group of nursing students has its clinical at a mental health clinic in an urban community. They have had several days of clinical experience working with assigned clients. The clinical instructor has called a conference with the students, and has asked them to consider cultural diversity issues within the clinic and with their assigned clients.

The instructor asks for student observations related to cultural diversity. The group identifies three clients who might experience cultural issues. The clients are African-American, Hispanic, and Chinese, and a student notes that the clinic does not have staff from these three cultural groups. One student notes that there is little interaction in the waiting room, but she wonders if this is due to the nature of the problems clients are experiencing rather than to the fact that clients are from diverse cultural groups. Another student comments that some clients and their families have had problems communicating with staff members not fluent in Spanish or Chinese.
