Topic 8: Assessment in Early Childhood Education
Introduction

Much focus is put on accountability in today’s society. This accountability makes its way into the early childhood classroom, requiring that those involved provide evidence that the program, teacher, and/or center are making an impact on the students they serve. With all of this comes the threat of funding withdrawals in cases where assessment is not done and/or where adequate results are not forthcoming. Standardized tests for young children are not appropriate. This section will provide some light on the issues associated with assessment and testing of young children including information on readiness, red-shirting, retention, and student portfolios.
